Upon arrival, responding officers discovered a trail of blood and a machete near the store, authorities said.
Police confirmed the victim, who was found injured with his left arm bandaged, was seated on the ground at the time responding officers arrived.
Preliminary investigations revealed that approximately an hour before the incident, a verbal dispute over money between the victim and Emilio Lorenzo Segura, 48, escalated into a fight, according to the report.
Police said the victim attempted to walk away to end the fight, however, Segura entered a nearby convenience store and, upon seeing the victim return to the scene, confronted and struck him with a machete in the forearm.
An interview with the victim revealed that earlier on the same day, Segura got into a verbal dispute over money, which turned physical when the defendant put his hands on the victim’s chest.
Authorities said the victim retaliated by slapping Segura in the face before walking away and seeking safety at a friend’s house nearby.
Upon returning to the scene, the victim was confronted by Segura who police said was wielding a machete and threatened the victim’s life before striking him on the left forearm.
The victim managed to disarm Segura and contained him with the help of bystanders until police officers arrived at the scene, investigators said.
During an interview with police, the victim expressed that he was in imminent danger of losing his life during the attack, the report stated.
The victim was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition.
Segura was transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he refused to speak without a lawyer present.
Jail records show he is facing one count of premeditated attempted murder with a deadly weapon and is being held without bond.
