Police said Steve Douglas McKinney, 58, spontaneously said “I killed Katie” when they arrived.

Officers said they found the dog on a dog bed on the back patio nearly decapitated, with its head only being held on by a small piece of skin from the back of its neck area.

The roommate told police he was awoken by the sound of the dog yelping and crying fearfully. He said when he looked outside, he saw McKinney actively twisting and wrenching the dog’s neck, attempting to separate the head from the dog’s body.

According to the arrest report, the roommate also witnessed McKinney use the same knife to cut his own neck.

Officers said McKinney claimed to be detoxing from fentanyl during the incident.

McKinney faces animal cruelty charges and is being held on $75,000 bond.
