MIAMI – Family and friends gathered on Thursday to remember a young mother whose life was cut short earlier this week.
Those who knew Jaklin Sabag, including several members of a mothers group she belonged to, united at the corner of Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast 22nd Street, creating a memorial in her memory.
“I can’t talk, because it could be me,” Margaret Pace Park Moms member Laura Espejo.
Dozens showed up to create the memorial honoring the young mother who was run over and killed Wednesday afternoon.
“It was really tragic for all of us,” said Margaret Pace Park Moms member Alexandra Paz. We kept saying how. How breaking it was. It could be any of us.”
City of Miami police said the driver of a J&M Scaffolds of Florida truck was stuck in traffic when the 33-year-old mother, pushing her 8-month-old son in a stroller, crossed in front of the vehicle.
The driver was unable to see the young mother and struck her, pinning her body underneath the truck.
Members of Margaret Pace Park Moms are calling for better infrastructure around busy Biscayne Boulevard.
As for Sabag’s young baby, he was taken to Ryder Trauma Center to be evaluated. Police said he was in good condition at last check.
Authorities said it did not appear that the driver was at fault.
The investigation remains ongoing.
