Mother pushing stroller dies after dump truck runs her over in Miami; baby hospitalized

MIAMI – A mother pushing her baby in a stroller died after a dump truck ran her over on Biscayne Boulevard in Miami’s Edgewater neighborhood early Wednesday afternoon.

The baby boy was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The crash happened just before 1 p.m. at the Northeast 22nd Street and Biscayne Boulevard intersection.

According to Miami police, the woman, identified as 33-year-old Jaklin Sabag, was pinned underneath the truck.

The baby was “alert and crying” after the crash, according to a Miami Police Department spokesperson.

Images from Sky 10 showed a crushed stroller on the road next to the dump truck.

According to police, the woman, the baby and another pedestrian crossed in front of stopped traffic, outside of the crosswalk. The truck driver was unable to see the pedestrians in front of him, drove forward and rolled over her, missing the stroller, police said.

The other pedestrian scooped the 8-month-old boy from the stroller.

Authorities closed a portion of Biscayne Boulevard as they investigated the crash. It reopened late Wednesday afternoon.

It does not appear the truck driver will be charged, police said. They said surveillance video corroborated his account of the crash.

Memorial set up:

Police said this stretch of Biscayne Boulevard in Edgewater is one of the most dangerous for pedestrians in the city. They said they are conducting an ongoing enforcement campaign targeting drivers who don’t yield and pedestrians who cross outside of crosswalks.
