MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A 20-year-old man is facing an attempted murder charge after authorities said he chased another man down and stabbed him outside of a Miami Beach hotel, leaving the victim in critical condition.

The suspect, Alexander Hernandez, told officers that he first met the victim after he offered to sell Hernandez drugs at a South Beach McDonald’s, police said.

According to police, the stabbing happened at around 10:15 a.m. Monday at the Tradewinds Hotel, located at 2365 Pine Tree Drive.

According to an arrest report, surveillance video showed Hernandez chasing the victim towards the hotel. After the pair fell at the hotel’s front door, Hernandez began stabbing the victim in the torso, police said.

Hernandez stabbed the victim in the chest and liver and punctured one of his lungs, the report states.

Police said the victim was eventually able to wrestle the folding knife away from Hernandez and got away as a hotel guest called police.

Hernandez, who was “very incoherent” and appeared to be “under the influence of an unknown substance,” told police that the man had approached him at the Lincoln Road McDonald’s and offered to sell him marijuana, the report states.

Hernandez, who told police his name was “Samuel Duarte,” said he agreed and the victim escorted him to a nearby house, police said. The report doesn’t say what happened immediately after that prompted him to chase the victim down.

As officers took Hernandez into custody, they found a large bag of marijuana, a small clear bag of hallucinogenic mushrooms and a small clear bag with a “white residue.”

After taking him to jail, police found out his real name.

Hernandez is facing charges of attempted second-degree murder, possession of psilocybin mushrooms, possession of suspected cocaine and possession of marijuana.

He was being held in Miami-Dade’s Metro West Detention Center as of Wednesday afternoon. Bond information was not available in online jail records.
