6 years later: Students create shape of heart in honor of Parkland school shooting victims

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – It’s been six years since 17 people were killed in the Parkland school shooting, and many honored the victims Wednesday with moments of silence and other events.

“Being surrounded by so much love and support from our families and friends helps to make the healing process a little better,” said Lori Alhadeff, whose daughter Alyssa was killed in the shooting.

Students and staff at Eagle Ridge Elementary School in Coral Springs gathered together on the PE field Wednesday morning to create the shape of a heart.

A service dog visited classrooms and mindfulness activities took place in the cafeteria.

A moment of silence and reflection was held a short time later at both Fort Lauderdale High School and Indian Ridge Middle School in Davie.

Later in the morning, Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Peter Licata visited with students at Coral Springs Middle School as they create beaded bracelets, paint rocks and design positivity papers with messages of kindness and love.
