Cops: Broward robber tells shooting victim he only survived because he ‘ran out of bullets’

Victim had never met suspect before, authorities say

Obed Martinez-Sanchez (BSO)

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Prosecutors asked a judge to keep a 19-year-old Fort Lauderdale man behind bars Monday after his arrest over the weekend on an attempted murder charge.

Broward prosecutors alleged in a motion for pretrial detention that Obed Martinez-Sanchez shot a man three times in an attempted robbery, then told him, “The only reason I didn’t kill you is because I ran out of bullets.”

The motion doesn’t make clear exactly when or where the incident took place, but Fort Lauderdale police arrested Martinez-Sanchez on Sunday, according to jail records.

The court documents state that just before the shooting, Martinez-Sanchez picked up the victim and two others from a party in Oakland Park.

He’s accused of then pointing the gun at the victim in an attempt to rob him, then teaming up with an “unknown witness” to physically attack him. He then opened fire, prosecutors said.

Authorities allege that Martinez-Sanchez then drove off in a red Honda Civic.

Prosecutors described the victim as “random” and said he had never met Martinez-Sanchez before.

In arguing for pretrial detention, prosecutors noted that, aside from the facts of the case and the weight of the evidence against Martinez-Sanchez, he poses a danger to the community.

They also noted that he is a Honduran national with a pending immigration hold and said it’s not clear how long he’s been living in the United States.

A judge is expected to hear the state’s motion on Wednesday.

In the meantime, Martinez-Sanchez remained held without bond in the Broward Main Jail on an attempted murder charge as of Monday afternoon, according to jail records.
