MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade police are investigating a hit-and-run crash and shooting that occurred Friday morning in southwest Miami-Dade.
According to authorities, two vehicles were involved in a crash shortly before 5:45 a.m. in the 7300 block of Southwest 82nd Street.
Police said one of the drivers initially fled the scene, but then returned.
The other driver believed the driver who fled the scene had returned to run him over, so he grabbed his gun and shot at the driver, authorities said.
Police said the injured driver, identified by his former partner as Lazaro Hernandez, was found a short distance away on Sunset Drive and Southwest 74th Street. He was then transported to Jackson South Medical Center in stable condition.
A woman with whom Hernandez shares children told Local 10 News that he showed up drunk to his apartment complex Friday morning and accidentally hit his neighbor’s pickup truck and drove off.
When he returned, the truck owner, who family members identified as Cristian Hernandez, of no relation to Lazaro Hernandez, shot him.
“At first, it was my dad calling the cops and then a gunshot and then some commotion before the cops showed up,” Cristian Hernandez’s daughter told Local 10.
Police said Lazaro Hernandez will be taken into custody once he is discharged from the hospital.
Authorities said the other driver was also detained for questioning.
No other details were immediately released.
