Hialeah PD: Family dispute led to shooting outside hospital

HIALEAH, Fla. – A 21-year-old man has been arrested after a family dispute led to a shooting Tuesday night in the parking lot of a hospital in Hialeah, authorities confirmed Wednesday.

Luis Martinez Rodriguez, of Miami, faces a charge of attempted second-degree murder.

He went before a judge on Wednesday and was ordered to be held without bond.

According to Hialeah police, the shooting occurred around 7:50 p.m. Tuesday in the maternity ward parking lot of Palmetto General Hospital, located at 2001 W 68th St.

Police said Martinez Rodriguez got into an argument with a family member who he then shot once in the arm.

In bond court, it was revealed that Martinez Rodriguez opened fire because the victim “verbally disrespected him.”

Martinez Rodriguez fled the scene before officers arrived as the victim, Carlos Costa, 43, walked into the emergency room to seek help, authorities said.

According to the suspect’s arrest report, Martinez Rodriguez’s girlfriend is currently admitted to the hospital as she had just given birth.

Police said the girlfriend’s mother told police that she was smoking outside the hospital with the victim, the suspect and the suspect’s mother.

She said the victim and Martinez Rodriguez began arguing and she then heard a gunshot.

Police said detectives were eventually able to make contact with Martinez Rodriguez and convince him to return to the scene, where he was taken into custody.

Further details about the argument that led to the shooting were not immediately released.
