Shark season heats up as 10-foot Great White pings off Florida Keys

ISLAMORADA, Fla. – We know snowbirds flock to South Florida during the winter. So do sharks.

A 10-foot, 3-inch Great White named Penny pinged off Islamorada on Sunday.

Penny is a juvenile female that weighs more than 500 pounds.

Last April, Penny became the 92nd Great White to be tagged by the conservation group Ocearch.

In November, Penny was seen off Charleston, South Carolina.

Since then, she has swum about 20 miles per day south on her voyage to the Keys.

Ocearch tracks a sharp uptick of Great White Sharks off Florida during the winter months as they try to escape old man winter.
