Miami Northwestern High grad named Sailor of the Year

WASHINGTON – A graduate of Miami Northwestern Senior High School just received an amazing honor at sea.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Troyal Higgs was named Sailor of the Year aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln.

The Navy said that, “Sailor of the Year is an accolade given to an exemplary sailor selected by a board of senior enlisted out of multiple competitive entries.”

Higgs graduated from Northwestern High in 2013 and joined the Navy 10 years ago.

“It shows that my hard work, dedication and mentorship to improving sailor outcomes did not go unnoticed.” Higgs said. “I am proud of the Sailor and woman I have grown into and will strive to promote professional and personal growth.”

The USS Abraham Lincoln is a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier based out of San Diego.

There are about 6,000 service members on the Lincoln, including the ship’s crew of 3,200 and aircrew of 2,480.
