FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Animal lovers in South Florida recently helped Dr. Cynthia Rodgers, a small animal veterinarian, to treat a 5-month-old puppy after a vicious dog attack in Broward County.
Rodgers said the puppy, named Glitter, had suffered several skull fractures, so she needed a more detailed computed tomography scan. X-rays, she said, are less costly, but these were just not good enough. The CT scan machine had to travel to the puppy.
“Glitter was saved through the hard work here and along with assistance from the public,” Rodgers said. “They have been wonderful in helping fundraiser for this care.”
Glitter is one of many veterinary patients in need in Broward County. This is why animal lovers were promoting the 34th annual VCA Walk for the Animals to benefit the Humane Society of Broward County.
The public fundraiser is on Saturday morning at the Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park, at 80 Las Olas Circle, in Fort Lauderdale. Organizers said the registration desk opens at 7:30 a.m., and the walk is at 9 a.m.
The veterinary needs at the Humane Society’s shelter at 2070 Griffin Road, in Fort Lauderdale, vary from preparing medications to conducting surgeries. The most common are a spay or neuter operation, microchip implementation, and vaccine shots.
A $10 donation pays for a vaccine. A $20 donation covers a microchip. A $30 donation can take care of a heartworm test. A $50 can cover surgery to spay or neuter a cat.
Christopher Agostino, the president and chief executive officer of HSBC, said the national organization doesn’t fund the local one or vice versa.
“None of your local dollars through taxes, be it state, federal or municipalities fund the work that we do here,” Agostino said adding that he hopes the walk will raise nearly $500,000 since it is the largest fundraising event of the year for HSBC.
Agostino encouraged participants to join the walk with their dogs.
