FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Authorities are investigating after a male driver was left hospitalized after crashing his car into a canal in Fort Lauderdale Thursday afternoon.
Sky 10 flew over the scene of the crash where authorities were focusing on a vehicle that appeared to be fully submerged in a canal near the 5100 block of Northwest 33rd Avenue.
Authorities said Oakland Park Fire Rescue responded to the area after receiving a report of a vehicle fully submerged in a canal with the driver still inside.
Upon arrival, first responders entered the water and were able to get the male out of the silver Nissan Altima and onto land where they performed CPR, police said.
Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue transported the male to Florida Medical Center in critical condition., according to authorities.
Police said two officers sustained minor injuries as a result of this incident but are expected to be OK.
Marie Edouard, who works nearby, told Local 10 News that she was at the scene when first responders pulled the victim out of the water.
“I understand he had a medical emergency or something because he was an older gentleman,” she said.
Authorities said it appeared as if the driver reversed his car going at a high rate of speed, ran over the parking barriers before plunging into the water.
Police have not released information on the victim’s age or identity at this time.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
