BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Broward County rescue crews located a small plane Wednesday that had crashed in the Florida Everglades near Alligator Alley and found two men dead in the wreckage.
The wreckage was located near mile marker 28, about four miles west of U.S. 27. Sky 10 was over the scene, where the plane had caught fire.
According to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue officials, the Cessna Skyhawk went missing at around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday and appeared to be airborne for about 15 minutes before it disappeared.
Radio admissions show a loved one of a victim first alerted rescuers that something was wrong.
911 Dispatcher: “Girlfriend is calling, advising he was supposed to call her when he landed, and he did not. His phone is offline.”
Data from FlightAware shows the plane, registered to Florida General Aviation Corporation, took off from North Perry Airport.
“We were only notified about 10:30 this morning (Wednesday) that an aircraft was missing,” said Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael Kane.
The pilot was later reported missing.
A BSFR spokesperson said crews were observing, but not actively fighting the small fire.
Authorities have not identified the men who were killed in the crash as of Thursday morning.
A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration said the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
