Man accused of fleeing, swerving at deputy while speeding in Florida Keys

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – Authorities in the Florida Keys arrested a West Palm Beach man who allegedly nearly hit a deputy with his car while refusing to pull over.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, 40-year-old Jose Cervantes Barcenas was arrested Saturday.

Barcenas faces charges of fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, driving without a valid driver’s license and having an expired registration, deputies said.

It was Saturday at approximately 10:21 a.m. near Mile Marker 35 on U.S. 1 when deputies said Barcenas was clocked going 102 mph in a Dodge pickup truck.

Authorities said Barcenas failed to pull over and swerved at a deputy on the side of the highway, nearly hitting him, while the deputy was attempting to set up spike strips.

Barcenas eventually stopped near the Sugarloaf Lodge and was taken into custody.
