MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Detectives with the Miami-Dade Police Department investigated the death of a woman in the county’s West Perrine area Friday morning.
The woman, who hasn’t been publicly identified, was found dead in the area of Southwest 174th Terrace and 103rd Avenue.
Images from Sky 10 showed the woman’s tarp-covered body in a grassy area closed off with crime scene tape. Multiple police officers were at the scene.
An MDPD spokesperson confirmed that investigators were at the scene investigating the woman’s death, but listed her cause of death as “unclassified” pending an autopsy.
Family members told Local 10 News the woman was pregnant, homeless and had just been released from jail.
They believe she was murdered and identified her as 34-year-old Cassandra Davis.
“She wouldn’t hurt a fly. She may have had her flaws but she was a sweet person she was a sweet person,” Krystal Coppett, Davis’ cousin, said. “She loved life. She was a free spirited person unfortunately she lost her life to the streets.”
Romania Dukes, with the group Mothers Fighting for Justice, said she’s helped Davis get help on several occasions.
“When I heard about it, it just tore my soul apart. I just had to run over here and find out,” Dukes said. “We walked around and gave all the homeless people $5 to $10 dollars and a gift card. And she was one of the people that I was looking for personally.”
Dukes said regardless of how Davis lived, she did not deserve whatever happened to her.
“She needs justice,” Dukes said. “Just like we need justice, we are going to fight for her.”
