MIAMI – Miami police are investigating a shooting that injured a student on Thursday night in a parking lot at Miami Northwestern Senior High School.
A Local 10 News crew was outside the school at 1100 NW 71st St. Friday morning as crime scene investigators were still in the faculty parking lot, examining the scene.
Some investigators were seen picking up what appeared to be shell casings and placing them in evidence bags. A backpack was also seen on the ground.
Police confirmed that they responded to the school Thursday night after receiving a ShotSpotter alert and found one victim who had been shot.
A spokesperson for the school district later confirmed to Local 10 that a student had been shot following a sporting event at the school.
“What I know is it was a fight or something and people got intense, and it was an intense game last night,” a student identified as Annex Jean said.
The victim was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital. His condition has not yet been released.
No details were immediately released by police about what led up to the shooting, however, students told Local 10 News reporter Liane Morejon that there was a basketball game Thursday night between Northwestern and Miami Central High School.
One student said he heard there was some sort of fight between either two kids or two groups of kids that resulted in the shooting.
“It was just a basketball game,” Jean said. “Shouldn’t have happened. We just gotta do better as people.”
Sources with knowledge of the investigation told Local 10 News that the victim is 15 years old and was shot multiple times.
“I’m very disappointed seeing people shooting at a high school -- like, it’s crazy,” sophomore Cameron Tremble said.
Two vehicles were eventually towed from the parking lot. The school’s principal notified parents about the shooting via a recorded phone message.
“The principal said it resulted in someone getting injured and be aware that there will be a lot more school officers around the area,” sophomore Katherine Carballo said.
The spokesperson for the school district did not confirm whether the student attends Northwestern or another school.
