Man, 76, charged in Hollywood crash that sent pedestrian to nursing home, police say

Daniel Vassello (BSO)

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – A 76-year-old Hallandale Beach man was driving more than 20 mph over the speed limit when he slammed into a pedestrian crossing U.S. 1, launching him 75 feet across the road, according to Hollywood police.

Police said the victim survived the August crash, but suffered a traumatic brain injury and ended up in a long-term assisted living facility. The driver, Daniel Vassello, ended up in jail Wednesday.

A Hollywood police report states that just before 9 p.m. on Aug. 25, Vassello was driving a Nissan Sentra at 57 mph in a 35 mph zone in the 2300 block of North Federal Highway when he struck the pedestrian.

Police said they were able to determine Vassello’s speed through surveillance video from a nearby business.

“The crash would have not occurred had Vassello operated his vehicle at or near the speed limit and exercised due caution,” Hollywood police Officer Alejandro Falcon wrote in the report.

Authorities booked Vassello into the Broward Main Jail on a felony charge of reckless driving causing serious bodily injury.

He was being held on a $1,000 bond as of Thursday morning.
