BSO: 1 killed during Pompano Beach shooting

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – The Broward Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that turned fatal, which occurred Wednesday morning in Pompano Beach.

According to deputies, the shooting was reported around 8 a.m. at an apartment building near the 1300 block of Northeast Fourth Street, just behind Pompano Beach High School.

A woman who lives in the area, identified only as Donna, said she was taking out her dog when ambulances started showing up, along with a frantic woman.

“She was just pacing back and forth and I just gave her some coffee and a tissue,” Donna said. “She just said, ‘It’s my son. He called me and he called 911,’ and that’s all she knew at that point.”

Deputies arrived at the scene and made contact with the victim and another person who was detained for questioning.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This is way, way too close,” Joan Rolenzano, who lives nearby, said.

Neighbors told Local 10 News reporter Hatzel Vela that this is a neighborhood where residents typically help each other out.

“This neighborhood is very quiet,” Donna said.

Lisa Clark, who also lives in the area, said she had to pick up her granddaughter after her school was placed lockdown.

“We got a phone call from my granddaughter; she was crying hysterical. They had put her in the bathroom,” Clark said.

In fact, the school was on what they call a “secured status” for most of the morning.

That means no one can get in or out of the school.

“I heard them say on the intercom, ‘We’re on lockdown. Everybody shelter in place,’” Donna said.

BSO homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances leading up to the killing.

No arrests have been made.

Anyone with further information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
