Mystery in Broward: Volunteer divers ‘shocked’ to find skeletal remains in car last registered in 2005

Detectives work to identify human remains in 80s model Oldsmobile at pond in Sunrise

Helping to solve mysteries is the passion of the members of Sunshine State Sonar, a St. Petersburg-based search team that uses sonar technology to find vehicles, boats, or missing persons under water.

Mike Sullivan, a diver who founded the organization of volunteers, said they found human remains inside a retention pond on Saturday in Sunrise, near Sawgrass Mills Mall.

While under about 25 feet of water, Sullivan said they looked through the back window of a white 80′s Oldsmobile, and saw skeletal remains.

“We were shocked that there was going to be someone in that vehicle,” Sullivan said. “We didn’t expect it”

Sunrise detectives learned the car was last registered in 2005. Sullivan said they were searching for reports of missing people who were last seen in an Oldsmobile, but they have had no success.

“It’s a mystery to us,” Sullivan said. “We have no idea who this is, at this point.”

Their work continues.

“We have found roughly ten people in the last 12 months alone,” Sullivan said. “We found five people, alone, in the last week.”
