FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A driver was killed after crashing into a tractor-trailer in Fort Lauderdale.
It happened early Thursday evening along the 2300 block of Northwest 19th Street.
According to police, the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene.
A witness told Local 10 News the truck was attempting to back in when the vehicle slammed into the trailer portion. Another witness told a similar story, saying she was walking with her children when she saw the car barrel into the back of the trailer.
She said some witnesses tried to help the young driver to no avail.
Family members who arrived at the scene identified the driver as 18-year-old Tra’nayiah Shaw.
On Friday, several similar trucks were seen pulling out of the same facility, including one truck that had a worker stopping traffic for -- something witnesses said did not happen Tuesday night.
Traffic homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances that led up to the crash, but Detective Ali Adamson, a spokeswoman for the police department, said the preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the sedan was at fault.
Still, she says the investigation remains ongoing and anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has further information is asked to call Investigator Paul Williams at 954-828-5755.
Workers at the company involved in the crash -- Christal Transport -- declined to comment Friday.
