‘They were my babies’: Miami-Dade police probe theft, slaughter of 2 horses in Redland area

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Police in Miami-Dade County are investigating after two horses were stolen and slaughtered in the rural Redland area.

They were taken from a property located at 20641 SW 168th St. sometime overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday.

The two horse carcasses were found after they were slaughtered only yards away from the property.

“These horses were butchered very much in the same manner you would any other livestock for consumption,” said Miami-Dade police Detective Andre Martin.

Martha Insignares said she’s lived on the land for 25 years. She said there have been others who have had their horses stolen.

She said the two that were taken, a 10-year-old male named Muneco and a 6-year-old female named Baby Doll, were like family.

“These horses were ridden yesterday,” she said. “They were my babies.”

Insignares said there are cameras on her property and she hopes the footage reveals some sort of clue into who the horse thieves may be.

“Many friends of mine have experienced this,” she added. “I have light and I’m here with guns —we all carry. I thought it was secure and it wasn’t and they still did it.”

Police say there is a market for horse meat, but buying and selling it violates Florida Law.

They also said the two horse carcasses were removed from the area and are being investigated by the MDPD’s agricultural investigations unit.

Anyone with information on the suspect or suspects is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
