Road rage shooting in Las Olas leaves 1 hospitalized, police say

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fort Lauderdale police are investigating a road rage incident that they said ended with a man shooting at a vehicle in Las Olas overnight Wednesday.

Police said they responded to a shooting call just before 12:30 a.m. near the 1200 block of East Las Olas Boulevard.

Upon their arrival, officers said they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds who was then transported to Broward Health Medical Center by Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.

An FLPD spokesperson told Local 10 News that a preliminary investigation revealed the shooting was related to a road rage incident.

Authorities said the shooter remained at the scene after the incident and is cooperating with the investigation.

It was determined that the victim had punched the gunman before the shooting occurred, according to police.

Local 10 News obtained cellphone video that showed a heavy police presence in the area as detectives continued to question possible witnesses.

A Local 10 News crew also returned to the crime scene Wednesday afternoon where blood spots were seen scattered throughout a nearby street of where the incident was reported.

Witnesses said they heard multiple shots ring out as numerous police officers responded to the scene.

“I was just about to get in the bed and all of a sudden I hear pow, pow, pow,” said Dean Serrenho, who lives nearby, “The quick(ness) of the shots, it kind of had me dawn, all of a sudden cops rolled i, and I said that was definitely gunshots.”

Evidence markers continued to surround a black Acura sedan. Witnesses told Local 10 News that the man was driving that car when he was shot.

Police told Local 10 News that the shooter was released pending a “stand-your-ground” case review.

Residents say that people need to keep their cool in the new year and avoid any situations like this from happening.

“People have to stay vigilant, hopefully, people calm down,” said Serrenho. “It’s a new year and new start. Obviously, people have some anger and unfortunately somebody took it out on someone else.”

Detectives have not released the identities of those involved in the shooting at this time.
