Shooting in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood leaves man dead, police say

MIAMI – Miami police respond to a shooting Wednesday morning that they say left a 39-year-old man dead in the city’s Overtown neighborhood.

A spokesperson with the Miami Police Department told Local 10 News that officers received a call about a person being shot around 10:40 a.m. near the area of Northwest Fifth Avenue and Northwest Sixth Street.

Sky 10 flew over the scene just before 11 a.m. where multiple Miami police vehicles were spotted in the area and detectives were seen placing caution tape around the backyard of a home and evidence markers on the ground.

Sky 10 cameras also focused on a white tarp that appeared to cover a body and was placed under trees next to a bicycle near the backyard of a home next to the crime scene.

MPD Captain Freddie Cruz spoke briefly with Local 10 News Wednesday afternoon and confirmed that a young man was killed in the shooting.

“It’s a very active scene,” he said. “I can confirm that a young man has lost his life. We’re asking the community to put the person or persons responsible behind bars.”

Family members and friends who arrived at the scene throughout the afternoon told Local 10 News that the man went by the nickname, “Bam.”

“He was a good person and didn’t bother nobody,” said Connie Evans, who said she knew the victim.” My daughter just found him a job that he was going to start tomorrow, and all of a sudden, this happened.”

A Local 10 News crew was at the scene following the aftermath of the shooting where the victim’s father was stopped by police after he crossed over crime scene tape and approached his son’s body that was covered by a tarp.

The incident has left many neighbors concerned about their safety.

“They need to put these guns down,” said Evans. “He did not deserve this.”

“What’s most disturbing is that this happened in the late morning hours and lots of people were around, so we know a lot of people were here. It’s a residential neighborhood, so not too common,” added Cruz.

Police also urged anyone with information on the shooting to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
