Police ID attempted murder suspect accused of shooting Sunrise officer

Officers also shot him; both he and officer survived

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. ā€“ Authorities have identified the suspect accused of shooting and wounding a Sunrise police officer near a Fort Lauderdale bus station Tuesday afternoon.

Romuliss Jarquives Hicks, 31, had been wanted for attempted murder and carjacking in connection with a Dec. 30 shooting in Sunrise.

A law enforcement source said officers had been serving a warrant on Hicks near the park-and-ride on Northwest 22nd Avenue when he opened fire just before 2:30 p.m., shooting the officer in the leg.

Police said they returned fire and wounded Hicks. Medics took both the suspect and the officer to Broward Health Medical Center; both survived.

The wounded officer hasnā€™t yet been publicly identified.

According to an arrest warrant, in the Dec. 30 incident, Hicks shot and wounded his girlfriend ā€” the mother of his baby daughterā€” then stole her 2003 Mercury Sable.

Hicks shouldnā€™t have had a gun in the first place, according to police, because heā€™s a career criminal convicted of four felonies and was on probation for robbery at the time of the shooting.

Authorities booked Hicks into the Broward Main Jail Tuesday, where he was being held without bond.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the police shooting.
