Sunrise police officer shot in Fort Lauderdale; suspect also shot

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A Sunrise police officer was shot and wounded in Fort Lauderdale Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

The shooting happened sometime before 2:30 p.m. at a park-and-ride station along Northwest 22nd Avenue, north of Broward Boulevard.

The officer, who was shot in the leg, was taken to Broward Health Medical Center and was stable, police said.

Sunrise police said the officer was performing an “investigation” at the time.

A law enforcement source told Local 10 News that officer was serving a warrant on a suspect in a carjacking and attempted murder.

Authorities said the suspect fired first.

Police said the suspect was shot as well and taken to the hospital and was also stable.

Authorities haven’t publicly identified the suspect or the officer as of Tuesday afternoon.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the police shooting.
