Police: Man confesses to NYE hit-and-run crash injuring man in Miami-Dade

MIAMI – A 60-year-old man appeared in Miami-Dade County court on Tuesday accused of being the driver who was involved in a New Year’s Eve hit-and-run crash.

Jose L. Torres was driving a 2015 Nissan Altima at about 2:25 p.m., on Dec. 31 when he collided with David Butcher, who was riding a 2024 Yamaha Raptor ATV, and hit a palm tree, according to the arrest report.

The crash was near the intersection of Southwest 207 Avenue and 240 Street in Redland, and Torres did not stop to help Butcher, who required hospitalization, according to the police report.

Torres, of Country Walk, surrendered to police officers at about 8 p.m., on Monday, and confessed to his involvement, according to police.

Miami-Dade County correctional officers booked him at about 1:10 a.m., on Tuesday, at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, records show.

Torres was facing a charge of leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury.
