A man is spending time behind bars after police said he broke into his granddaughter’s Miami apartment and threatened her and a male victim with a machete on New Year’s Eve.

Miami police officers were dispatched around 3 a.m. Sunday to an apartment near the 3100 block of Northwest 22nd Avenue after receiving an emergency call for a domestic violence incident.

As police arrived in front of the home, the victim waved to a responding officer and pointed in the direction of the back of the building.

Police said they heard the sound of metal falling on the ground, at which time they spotted a man, who they identified as 43-year-old Henson Manzo, walking down the stairs. They said they found a machete on the ground next to the stairs before detaining him.

When asked about the machete, Manzo responded, “That’s my machete. I came downstairs with it,” according to the report.

The female victim, who lives at the apartment, told police that she heard Manzo knocking on her front door and initially ignored it until he began to kick it down and ended up cracking open the door to confront her.

The victim identified Manzo as her step-grandfather and told police that she formerly lived with him and her grandmother, the report stated.

Police said Manzo attempted to force his way into the rear bedroom of the apartment where another man was hiding while armed with a machete.

Manzo made threats to kill the man and said, “If I see you here again, I’m going to f----- kill you,” while shoving his granddaughter away, according to the report.

Authorities said the man called the police while the woman was struggling to detain Manzo.

Police said Manzo fled the apartment after hearing police sirens and was detained shortly after by police.

Manzo’s arrest report states that police obtained surveillance video that showed Manzo arriving at the apartment and attempting to pry the locks with a machete, but he was unsuccessful.

Additional video also showed him kicking the door in and forcing his way into the apartment, according to investigators.

According to jail records, Manzo is facing two separate counts of armed burglary with assault.

As of Tuesday, he was being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
