Hundreds line up in Miami Beach for holiday drag show amid nationwide controversy

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Hundreds were seen lining up in Miami Beach Wednesday for a night of holiday drag.

It’s been a year since the Christmas-themed drag show at Fort Lauderdale’s Broward Center for the Performing Arts sparked controversy.

The DeSantis Administration said they received complaints about children being present.

The show was accused of violating a state law that prohibits children from attending an adult live performance.

The state defined the law in part as “any show in front of a live audience depicting prosthetic or imitation genitals or breasts.”

The state went after several venues across Florida, threatening them with serious penalties.

However, despite multiple attempts to have it shut down, a business in Orlando took the state to court where a federal judge in Florida temporarily blocked the law.

As a result, the state asked the Supreme Court to reinstate it, but just last month, the same court refused.

The decision was seen as a huge win for drag shows.

“This is an art form, drag is an art form,” said drag show fan Talia Life. “There are drag shows that are catered to kids. This is not that, clearly. This is 18 and up.”

But for those who support the state law, a few of whom showed up in Miami Beach Wednesday night to protest.

“Definitely, the law is still standing,” said one male protestor. “What’s taking place here is totally erroneous. “It destroys the family.

The DeSantis Administration says it’s disappointed with the Supreme Court’s decision but added that they are in the appeals process of a lower court.
