Shots fired at Fort Lauderdale police cruiser during armed robbery in Miami, authorities say

Police: 1 person in custody; No injuries reported at this time

MIAMI ā€“ Police have taken a possible armed robbery suspect into custody who they said fired gunshots at a Fort Lauderdale police cruiser in Miami Friday evening.

Fort Lauderdale police spokesperson Casey Liening told Local 10 News Friday that FLPD officers were working a joint investigation with the Miami Police Department just after 5:30 p.m. when suspects involved in a possible armed robbery fired shots at an officer and struck his vehicle multiple times in the area of 90 Northeast 39th Street, outside of the Swan restaurant of the Miami Design District.

Fort Lauderdale police said officers observed a vehicle Saturday morning that matched the description of a vehicle involved in Friday nightā€™s shooting in Miami. The vehicle was ultimately stopped on the Turnpike near Glades Road and one person is in custody, according to Liening.

Police said there were no reported injuries, however, the search for the responsible suspect or suspects still remains active.

Local 10 News spoke to a man who said a couple was leaving this area, waiting outside for their Rolls-Royce to charge when two men dressed in black approached them.

ā€œHe pulled out the gun, cocked it, put it behind his head, and I was just waiting to hear a bang when I figured out that it was a robbery,ā€ said Charley Herz, who witnessed the robbery.

One witness said they were able to snatch an expensive watch from the couple before fleeing the scene.

ā€œWhen I heard the screaming, I ran over there and it was a woman with her boyfriend or husband saying, ā€˜They took my stuff,ā€' said Devien Torres, who works nearby.

According to Kiara Delva, a spokeswoman for the Miami Police Department, one suspect who was possibly involved in the incident has been detained.

Delva said police established a perimeter along North Miami Avenue between 36th and 46th Street.

Drivers are being asked to avoid the area as police continue their investigation.

Authorities said officers with both agencies remained at the scene to search for the suspect or suspects responsible and a police perimeter has been set up in the area.

No more information has been given at this time.
