2 rescued after boat begins sinking near Government Cut

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Two people were rescued Friday morning after their boat began taking on water.

The incident happened around 10:45 a.m. about 3 miles east of Government Cut.

According to Coast Guard officials, they received a call from a good Samaritan around 10:45 a.m., who said two people were in the water.

Officials said the good Samaritan rescued the victims, who were then transferred onto a Coast Guard boat.

“I’ve been fishing out here for almost 35 years and I haven’t watched a boat sink in front of me,” said boat captain Mike Dumas.

Dumas told Local 10 News that he happened to be running a chart nearby when he and other people on board noticed the sinking boat.

“It all happened so fast,” Dumas said. “From the time we noticed they were sinking to the time the boat was underwater, (it) might have been 40 seconds.”

Once back on land, the people on board didn’t have much to say other than a quick “thank you” to the good Samaritans.

Sea Tow later showed up and brought them and the boat, a 30-foot cuddy cabin boat, to Pelican Harbor Marina.

No injuries were reported.

It’s unclear what caused the boat to sink.
