MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after two cats were discovered impaled by large darts in Tavernier nearly two weeks ago.

Margie Schwartz, with Whiskers and Paws Forever of Monroe County, said her organization was called to help.

“We went back, we trapped the cats and got them help,” Schwartz said.

Authorities said a second injured cat was also discovered in the same location.

The felines were taken to the Keys Animal Hospital in Marathon to be treated.

Schwartz said she was saddened the cats were harmed after her organization helped to get them and many others in the area spayed and neutered.

“And then someone comes along and tries to kill them? It’s unbelievable. It’s horrible,” she said.

Additional darts were also found at the scene, according to investigators.

Whiskers and Paws is offering a $1,400 reward for any information that leads to an arrest.
