1 hospitalized after pickup slams into southwest Miami-Dade home

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A driver crashed his pickup truck into a southwest Miami-Dade home Wednesday morning.

Video from Sky 10, taken just after 10:30 a.m., showed the front half of the truck inside the house, located in the 11900 block of Southwest 185th Street in the South Miami Heights area.

First responders from the Miami-Dade Police Department and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue were at the scene. MDFR officials confirmed that one person was transported to a hospital with “traumatic injuries.”

“We’re just in shock, it’s pretty scary,” witness Thaimi Hernandez said.

The crash started with a wreck at a nearby intersection, witnesses say. Authorities believe the driver had a medical emergency behind the wheel, but the crash remains under investigation.

“We were like, oh, somebody hit her and took off and then we saw what actually happened,” Hernandez said.

Meritsell Vivar told Local 10 News that she was driving along Southwest 184th Street when the truck clipped her car at the 120th Avenue intersection, then went careening into the house. She said she was unhurt following the crash, save for some neck pain.

“I was spinning,” Vivar said. “He never stopped. Just continued.”

Neighbors told Local 10 News that a bystander, Hector Ramirez, pulled the man, who was unconscious, out of the vehicle, climbing over the debris to break the truck’s rear window in the process in order to free the man.

Ramirez, speaking in Spanish, chalked his actions up to “instinct.”

“When they took him out, he was bloody, like, his whole body,” Hernandez said.

Local 10 News later spoke to the homeowner, Nicole Ferrer, who said she had just finished a full renovation of her home a year ago.

While her husband and son weren’t home when the truck came barreling through, Ferrer said her dog was near the impact site. Luckily, she and her beloved pet are OK.

“I’m OK,” Ferrer said. “I’m alive, that’s the most important thing.”

Ferrer said she’s also grateful that the driver is alive.
