South Florida teacher’s playbook: Using Dolphins stats to teach math

PINECREST, Fla. – Inside Ms. Mary Martinez’s third-grade class at Pinecrest Elementary School, students are using the Miami Dolphins to help them learn.

Whether its Tyreek Hill’s receiving yards or Tua Tagovailoa’s passing stats, the students are learning math in a fun way. In one example, the class used math to figure out that Hill needs to average 110 receiving yards per game for the rest of the season to reach his goal of 2,000 yards.

Martinez, by the way, is a reading teacher.

“I’m following the (news on) Twitter. I’m listening to all the press conferences,” she said.

Martinez told Local 10 News’ Hatzel Vela that she teaches the way Dolphins Coach Mike McDaniel coaches his team: showing the students that a loss is just an opportunity to try again.

“When you lose, you learn,” she said. “That’s the only way that you’re learning, and let’s be excited, let’s learn from where we went wrong and let’s do better.”

Martinez’s teaching prowess has received a lot of attention on social media, all thanks to the power of sports.

To celebrate her teaching skills, the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders paid her a visit, bringing some Dolphins swag for the students, and of course, for Martinez.

“She brings about all the different aspects of the educational system into one,” said Pinecrest Elementary Principal Suzette Fraginals.

Martinez even received a personalized message from Dolphins linebacker Bradley Chubb.

“She helps me learn way better, in a fun way,” said student Landon Pérez.
