Police investigating after Miami-Dade school employee leaves gun in special needs classroom

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade police are investigating after they said a school employee left his gun inside a special needs classroom Tuesday in Kendall.

The incident occurred at Atlantis Academy, located at 9600 SW 107th Ave. Police initially described the employee as a teacher, but police later clarified that he is a school staff member, rather than an educator.

According to police, the employee apparently left his gun inside a classroom and it was discovered by someone else while he was on a field trip with students.

The school’s website states that it is a special education private school for “students with learning differences and various abilities.”

Parents of students who attend the school expressed their concerns to Local 10 News following the incident.

“These students, they have special needs so they might not even put it together and say, ‘Hey, what is this?’ and then fire it,” said Angela Saxton.

The school confirmed that the employee was immediately terminated for violating state laws and bringing a weapon on campus.

School officials said the employee was taken into custody by police.

No other details were immediately released by police.
