MIAMI – You might’ve seen them in South Florida, but on Friday night, two local businesses will be swimming with the sharks on Shark Tank.
Buena Papa, which is a Spanish phrase for “good potato” was created by husband and wife, James Windon and Joanna Windon by mistake.
“I was cooking my favorite meal Bandeja Paisa, which is one of our plates from my native country Columbia, and one of the biggest ingredients is rice,” said Joanna Windon, co-founder of Buena Papa Fry Bar. “And there I was with all my ingredients, and I was ready to cook the rice and there was no rice in the pantry.”
Without rice, the Windon’s had to improvise, so they used fries instead.
The rest is history and Buena Papa Fry Bar was born.
“Over the next couple of weeks, I started to create dishes around countries we visited, like Puerto Rico and Mexico. And what we did was take their famous street foods and put it on top of fries. We put all that together, created a marketing plan, and they said, ‘I think you might got something.”' said co-founder James Windon.
As a result, the couple are now taking their talents to Shark Tank to fetch a deal that could be life changing.
Once the doors open and you see the sharks, it really IS like a tank,” said Joanna Windon.
But the Windon’s aren’t the only ones representing the 305 (Miami) in the tank on Friday.
“Hey, I’m Mia, let me introduce the number one jumpsuit, Monosuit!” said Mia Murr.
Murr, of Bal Harbour, is the creator of Monosuit— a jumpsuit that blends fashion and functionality.
You’ve probably seen some of your favorite celebrities, such as Madonna, Alicia Keys and the Kardashian’s in one of their suits.
But now, Murr wants more and hopes the sharks take a bite.
Buena Papa plans to expand their business to Florida and Hollywood Beach.
See if either of these businesses strike a deal when Shark Tank airs right here at 8 p.m. on Local 10.
