MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The city of Miami Gardens is mourning the loss of a well-known former elected official.
Shirley Gibson, the first mayor of Miami Gardens, has died, Local 10 News learned Monday. She was 79 years old.
Gibson was a Miami-Dade police officer who later entered politics.
She graduated from St. Thomas University with a B.A. in Criminal Justice and an M.A. in Pastoral Ministry.
She served as Miami Gardens mayor from 2003 to 2012.
A cause of death has not yet been released.
