Student heads home to South Florida from Israel; describes scene at airport as sirens warned of rocket attack

BOCA RATON, Fla. – With the Israel-Hamas war now in its fifth day, many in Israel are facing challenges while trying to leave.

“My flight’s out at 5:30. I just literally got to the gate. I was waiting in line for hours,” a South Florida man studying in Israel told Local 10 News over FaceTime Wednesday.

The student, identified only as Gabe, is now flying back to Boca Raton.

He shot cellphone video showing passengers ducking for cover in the Tel Aviv airport after sirens, warning of a rocket attack, started to sound in the terminal.

“There also was a siren this morning,” he said. “The entire airport had to get down on the floor and cover their heads.”

Others returning back to Miami described how difficult it was to find a flight back home.

“The airports were packed because everybody wanted to get out. They were taking flights to Cyprus, Dubai -- anywhere just to get out,” one passenger said. “They were afraid that the airport might close and they’ll be stuck there.”
