Vice President Kamala Harris meets with Florida International University students

Harris attends campaign event in Miami Shores

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris visited Florida International University’s main campus on Thursday afternoon in Miami-Dade County.

Harris arrived at Miami International Airport at about 1:30 p.m., and she made the Fight for Our Freedoms College Tour’s sixth stop at about 2:30 p.m. at FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

“One of the many ways you can and will make a difference, one of those ways, is to vote,” Harris said.

Harris was with the U.S. Small Business Administrator Isabel Guzman and with Joseph Cartagena, better known as rapper Fat Joe. Jacqueline Pecker was among the FIU students who waited in line to attend.

“This is a special opportunity,” Pecker said.

Luisana Berbesi, an International Relations major, was among the FIU students who viewed the event as an educational opportunity.

“We want to know if it’s really worth it to be part of their team and vote for them or if we should pick another candidate,” Berbesi said.

Harris explained her position on gun control: “Assault weapons, designed to kill a lot of people quickly. There is no reason for them to be on the streets of a civil society.”

Cartagena closed the event by encouraging everyone in the audience to register to vote and to vote for Harris and President Joe Biden.

Harris was also scheduled to attend a Biden campaign reception at 6 p.m., in Miami Shores, and to fly out of MIA back to Washington, D.C., at about 7 p.m.
