MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene of a crash Friday morning involving a school transport van and another vehicle.
The crash was reported at 7:50 a.m. in the area of U.S. 1 and Southwest 230th Street.
Sky 10 was above the scene just after 8:30 a.m. and spotted damage to the rear driver’s side of the van.
According to Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Alex Camacho, the van was heading west on Southwest 230th Street, attempting to turn left onto the southbound lanes of U.S.1 when the driver of the van failed to yield the right of way to a Ford pickup truck that was traveling north on U.S. 1.
Camacho said the vehicles then collided at the intersection.
“The van was transporting children to school,” Camacho said in an email to Local 10 News. “There were approximately 9 children in the van at the time of the collision, 4 of which were transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.”
The driver of the pickup truck told Local 10 News reporter Liane Morejon that oddly enough, the van driver is her neighbor.
She said the children in the van were young -- about 5 and 6 years old -- and some suffered cuts to their faces. She said one child had a cut near her eye.
The driver of the pickup truck said she doesn’t believe any of the children were transported to the hospital by ambulance, but some parents chose to take their kids to the hospital to be checked out.
The northbound lanes of U.S. 1 were closed during the preliminary investigation but have since been re-opened.
Authorities did not confirm which school the children involved in the crash attend.
