Police: Pembroke Pines cop shoots at suspect who threw butcher knives at them

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. ā€“ A man was arrested Monday night in Pembroke Pines after he threw butcher knives in the direction of officers, leading to one officer firing their gun, authorities said.

The incident occurred in the 100 block of South Hollybrook Drive.

According to Pembroke Pines police, officers responded to a home at 6:37 p.m. after receiving a 911 call about a violent domestic disturbance.

Police said officers arrived and encountered 41-year-old Justin Brittain, who they said was involved in a domestic incident with his father when he threw multiple butcher knives toward the officers after they arrived at his home.

One of the knives struck an officer, but the officer wasnā€™t injured, police confirmed.

According to authorities, one officer shot at Brittain, but missed. He was then taken into custody.

Capt. Adam Feiner, a spokesman for the Pembroke Pines Police Department, told Local 10 News Tuesday that Brittain didnā€™t suffer any serious injuries in the shooting.

ā€œAs a result of one officer firing their weapon, an officer did contact the suspectā€™s knee and the injury is described as superficial,ā€ he said.

Brittain faces three counts of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer.

Police said the Broward Sheriffā€™s Office will investigate the police shooting, and the Pembroke Pines Police Department will investigate the domestic disturbance, the assault on a police officer and the battery on a police officer.

Brittain appeared in court Tuesday, where his total bond was set at $3,000.

Anyone with information about that is asked to call the Pembroke Pines Police Department at 954-431-2200, email tips@ppines.com, or call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.ā€™
