MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews airlifted a man to Jackson Memorial Hospital Monday afternoon after a crash at a railroad crossing in an industrial area south of Opa-locka.
The two-vehicle wreck happened just after 3:30 p.m. at a railroad crossing in the southbound lanes of Northwest 32nd Avenue, just north of 125th Street in the Westview area, according to MDFR.
The man ended up trapped in his sedan and needed to be pulled out by firefighters.
His blue Dodge Charger was heavily damaged and so too was the railroad crossing equipment. A cantilever containing warning lights was knocked to the ground.
Authorities didn’t specify the man’s condition as of Monday evening. A friend of the man, who was riding in a different car at the same intersection, told Local 10 News that his friend was stable.
“He was injured but he’s stable,” the friend said in Spanish.
Falling debris from the crash caused the back window of the friend’s vehicle to be smashed.
The southbound lanes of Northwest 32nd Avenue remained shut down as investigators worked the scene and removed the broken pieces of the train crossing, but eventually the lanes were reopened.
The crash did not involve a train, officials said.
