‘I’m begging’: Pompano Beach mom pleads for help finding ‘coward’ who killed son

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A Pompano Beach mother is asking for the public’s help tracking down her son’s killer.

Burnadette Lucas’ 35-year-old son, Donelle Hunter, was shot and killed on the evening of July 1 off Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Northwest 17th Terrace.

“I’m begging, I’m angry,” Lucas said.

Hunter had just left his home, when his mother got a knock on the door five minutes later. She went to the scene and found him injured but alert.

“He just looked at me and said ‘Ma, I’m OK.’ I said ‘Baby, don’t move,’” Lucas said.

He was headed to a corner store where groups are known to hang out. Lucas said she can’t make sense of this.

“He would never raise his voice,” she said. “It’s heartbreaking because he was shot in the back. That’s a coward. That’s a coward.”

Lucas said she thinks someone out there knows something but isn’t stepping up.

Broward Sheriff’s Office detectives are working the case and hope even the smallest of details can make a big difference.

“Please, I beg you to say something,” Lucas said. “Just give them a call. You won’t get in trouble.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
