A driver reported gaps on the segmental bridge that connects the Sawgrass Expressway southbound with Interstate 595 eastbound in Broward County. State authorities said there is nothing to worry about.

The “gaps” on the 1989 bridge are actually “expansion joints” that allow the segments to safely expand and contract with changes in temperature, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

After the driver’s report, FDOT deployed certified bridge inspectors and engineers to investigate and they found that the expansion joints were “intact and functioning as intended,” according to the FDOT.

After several complaints, Guillermo Canedo, a spokesman for FDOT, said the agency decided to review “aesthetic solutions” to cover the gaps.
