Protest march held in Fort Lauderdale following Supreme Court rulings

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Protesters gathered for a We the People March Sunday in Downtown Fort Lauderdale.

“Honestly, I’m so honored to be here. It’s so important to have representation,” said trans influencer Gia Gunn.

Protesters came together at Esplanade Park on Sunday morning for a march that began at 10 a.m.

“On the eve of the celebration of our independence, it’s important to stop and think about what that means,” said actress, director and artist Debbie Allen.

It comes on the heels of major Supreme Court rulings last week.

“We know we’re not going to solve things in one election,” said Parkland survivor and activist David Hogg. “The reason we’re here right now isn’t because of one, two or three elections -- it’s about decades of elections.”

The Supreme Court rejected President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness program, sided with a Christian web designer who refused to design a website for an engaged gay couple, and ruled against college admissions programs based on race.

Last year, the court ruled against nationwide protections of abortion rights.

Some protestors told Local 10 News they’re marching against what they see as attacks on civil rights.

“There’s so many people that just want equality and we’re here to show up and speak our minds,” said protestor Gino Campodonico.

The event is part of a national movement.

Marches were also planned in Dallas, Texas, Los Angeles, California and Columbia, South Carolina on Sunday.
