Florida law not requiring concealed weapon license doesn’t change much, expert says

MIRAMAR, Fla. – A Miramar police officer said the new state law allowing Floridians to carry firearms without a concealed weapon license doesn’t change much.

Officer Tony Egues said this doesn’t mean Floridians are allowed to carry firearms anywhere. Weapons are banned from police stations, jails, courthouses, and schools.

“People have this notion that ‘I can openly carry my firearm, just attach it to my hip!’ No, that’s not true. That firearm still has to be concealed,” Egues said.

A three-day waiting period and a background check are still required when buying a weapon, and convicted felons are still not allowed to carry, Egues said.

“The biggest concern for me is that people carry their firearms safely,” Egues said. “Get with a firearms instructor, take a weapon familiarization course. Do it the right way. The last thing that I want as an officer is to have to come to someone’s house because there has been a tragic accident.”
