OPA-LOCKA, Fla. – Detectives were searching for a burglar who fired a weapon once before fleeing on Thursday morning in northwestern Miami-Dade County, police said.
Police officers with the Opa-locka and Miami-Dade police departments responded to a three-story apartment building and its adjacent parking lot near Northwest 132 Terrace and 30 Avenue, also known as Aswan Road.
Police officers reported no one was injured, but without much information, during the investigation, Eric Bishop was among the area residents who felt like it was all a mystery.
“I was awake and I heard something,” Bishop said. “I am not an expert on gunshots, but I heard a ‘POW!’ And then, I see the police coming.”
An Opa-locka police officer placed pieces of red evidence marking tape over the edges of the doors and trunk of a parked white Nissan Maxima with a Texas license plate.
Detectives questioned a woman who was wearing green Despicable Me Minions pajama pants near a fenced entrance. She sat on the floor in the parking lot and later stood by a wall with a baby stroller.
A police officer at the scene, who wore a short sleeve Police Crime Suppression Team unit shirt, held a folded evidence paper bag, and another officer with a long-sleeve black shirt held another open evidence paper bag.
There were also detectives wearing black Criminal Investigation Department shirts, as a group of police officers allowed a woman and two kids with bookbags to leave the building.
A man hooked the white Nissan Maxima to a Downtown Towing truck, talked to the police officer who had placed the evidence tape on it, and drove away in the tow truck.
Detectives were asking anyone with information about the case to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
