MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Three people are behind bars after a cross-county chase over the weekend as police officers continue to crack down on illegal street racing, authorities announced Saturday.
Those suspects were caught allegedly trying to take over an intersection around 12:40 a.m. Saturday, and one of the vehicles has been tied to a similar incident just last week.
Police arrested 21-year-old Chenel Chevalier, 19-year-old Chelsey Gomez and 42-year-old Timothy Washington for charges related to reckless driving and fleeing from police.
As part of the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Intersection Takeover Detail, officers responded to an intersection off Southwest Eighth Street and 137th Avenue that they learned would be part of a vehicle take over.
From the sky, a Miami-Dade police helicopter watched as cars gathered at a shopping plaza. A police report states that the suspects were in a black Dodge Charger with white stripes and “began to drive recklessly at a high rate of speed.”
The police helicopter chased the Charger as it was driven through Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
The report states that Chevalier and Gomez ditched the Dodge and jumped into a getaway car driven by Washington.
The three are now facing a series of charges.
Washington faces a charge of accessory after the fact.
On the same day of those arrests, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it had arrested six high profile intersection takeover group members for street racing violations.
