MEDLEY, Fla. – A man trying to steal a massive truck got more than he bargained for Thursday when the owner of that truck was able to catch up to the thief.
The ordeal was caught on camera.
“The initial call was a violent male who was taking a truck,” said Medley Police Officer Deglys Chavarria.
In the video, two men can be seen approaching the passenger side of a blue transport truck. The alleged thief was already behind the wheel of the truck.
As the thief tries to drive off with the oversized truck, the two men are able to follow along and, at one point, can be seen hanging by the door.
Eventually, the two men are able to get the driver out of the truck and, once on the ground, they begin pummeling him.
Police later arrested that man, identifying him as 24-year-old Exon Gonzalez Caceres.
According to authorities, it all started at a Pilot Travel Center in Medley, located at 12200 NW S. Driver Drive, around 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
The owner of the blue transport truck was inside the gas station when he realized his truck was being stolen. Police said the man had left the truck running while inside.
Police said Gonzalez Caceres tried to ram other cars as he was trying to make his getaway, but as the video showed, he wasn’t able to get too far, after the owner of the truck took matters literally into his own hands.
“They were able to zip-tie his hands and zip-tie his knees,” said Chavarria.
The lesson from police in this instance, however, is not to leave your valuables unlocked, and be careful who you confront.
“Something where your life is not in immediate danger, don’t put yourself in immediate danger,” said Chavarria.
On Friday, Gonzalez Caceres appeared in Miami-Dade court where a judge set a monetary bond and ordered that he has to stay away from the gas station and both victims.
According to court records, Gonzales was on probation for another previous incident.
