MIAMI – A 45-year-old migrant from Guatemala stands accused of sexually abusing a child for about a year in Florida City.

Sergio Leopoldo Mejia Sicap appeared in Miami-Dade County court on Thursday after detectives reported that he confessed to the crimes on Wednesday.

“The victim was eight years old at the time of this conduct,” Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Mindy S. Glazer said in court adding that there was a warrant out for his arrest on an immigration violation.

The girl, who is now 12 years old, identified Mejia Sicap as her father’s former roommate and told detectives that while she lived with them he had raped her more than 20 times, according to the arrest report in the case.

Records show corrections officers were holding him without bond on the sexual battery on Thursday afternoon at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

During the court hearing Thursday, Glazer ordered Mejia Sicap to stay away from the victim. Prosecutors told Glazer that he will likely be facing more counts of sexual battery on a minor by an adult.

Court records show Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Teresa Pooler will be presiding over the case. Detectives were asking anyone with information about this or other cases involving Mejia Sicap to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
